Trastevere
The name of Trastevere derives from Latin "Trans Tiber" (across the Tiber). During the Roman empire, it was the area were the noble families used to live, since it was still within the city walls.
After the end of the empire, it became the headquarter of the Jewish trading community; when the Jewish community moved to the other side of the river, to the area now called the Ghetto, Trastevere became the working class area of the city.
Nowadays is known as the most “roman” of all neighborhoods, in its alleys you can still breath the atmosphere of the 1800, with the small caftsmen shops. In the evenings, it becames a night spot, with lots of bars and restaurants.
From here, you can walk to the Ghetto and Campo de Fiori (10 minutes walk), to the Gianicolo hill (10-15 minutes walk) and to the Pantheon (15 minutes walk).
