Vaticano

The State of the Vatican is located in the area where St Peter was martyrized and buried, and later, in 326, the emperor Costantino built the basilica on the tomb and in honor of the apostole. The Popes decided to transfer their residence there in 1929, when the Patti Lateranensi where signed, stipulating the reconciliation between the Italian State and the Holy See.

The Vatican State is a world apart, it has its own police (the Swiss Guards, that have been for centuries responsible for the Pope’s security and whose uniforms is said to have been designed by Michelangelo) and attracts every year millions of pilgrims from all over the world.
From this location, you can walk to Castel Sant’ Angelo, to the Spanish Steps (aprox 20-25 minutes walk).
